Project Overview

  • Treated Commodity: Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS - corn by-product meal) imported from the US into Vietnam.
  • Project Scale: 30 x 40-foot containers.
  • Consignment Status: Previously fumigated in the exporting country, yet live insects were still detected during physical inspection in Vietnam.
  • Key Pivotal Factor: Trusted by the Plant Quarantine Authority and the client, VFC Fumigation promptly provided technical consultation and developed a synchronized treatment plan compliant with all technical directives issued by the regulatory agency to control and eradicate the pests.

Project challenges

  • Detection of live insects despite prior fumigation in the US

The DDGS consignment had undergone phytosanitary treatment in the exporting country, yet live insects were still detected during inspection in Vietnam. This scenario necessitated the organization of a supplemental treatment under the direct orders of the competent authority, ensuring total pest control before the consignment could be released.

  • Scale of 30 containers requiring synchronized operational deployment

With 30 x 40-foot containers, the spatial layout of containers, installation of gas injection lines, gas sampling lines, circulation fans, and sealing materials demanded rigorous coordination. All operational stages had to adhere strictly to the unified technical protocol to maintain treatment parameters throughout the fumigation period.

  • Schedule pressure regarding import cargo release

The detection of live insects mandated that the consignment complete treatment before proceeding to subsequent logistics and delivery stages. Consequently, VFC Fumigation had to coordinate closely with the plant quarantine authority and the client to execute fumigation, conduct safety monitoring, and complete handover acceptance, minimizing disruptions to the commodity intake schedule.

Project Objectives

Eradicate all live target pests

Execute the phytosanitary treatment of 30 containers of DDGS according to the technical plan tailored to the consignment's status and regulatory agency directives.

Maintain treatment efficacy and safety control

Ensure rigorous enclosure gastightness standards, monitor Methyl Bromide (MB) gas concentrations throughout the 48-hour exposure period, and execute aeration and safety clearance testing prior to concluding operations.

Finalize acceptance and release cargo on schedule

Coordinate with the plant quarantine authority and the client during the inspection and acceptance process, facilitating the on-schedule release of all 30 containers as planned.

VFC Fumigation’s Solution

Backed by over 50 years of experience in the phytosanitary and fumigation sector, VFC Fumigation coordinated with the plant quarantine authority and the client to design a compliant treatment protocol for the US-imported DDGS consignment. The operational procedure was deployed synchronously, spanning container positioning, technical system installation, gas concentration monitoring, gas aeration, and final acceptance verification.

1
Survey and plan formulation

Based on the detected pest status and regulatory agency directives, VFC Fumigation provided consultation, developed a technical treatment plan, and coordinated the spatial arrangement of the 30 containers in alignment with the operational plan.

2
Piping system installation and gastight sealing using specialized fumigation sheets

The technical team installed gas delivery lines, gas sampling lines, and circulation fans according to the established protocol. Containers were sealed using the gastight sheet (tarpaulin) method to prevent fumigant leakage and maintain target gas concentrations.

3
Methyl Bromide injection via specialized vaporizers

Upon completing preparatory steps, VFC Fumigation injected Methyl Bromide (MB) through specialized vaporizers. The piping network and circulation fans facilitated uniform gas distribution throughout the treatment enclosure per technical specifications.

4
Gas concentration tracking and monitoring

Throughout the 48-hour exposure period, the VFC Fumigation team utilized specialized gas detection equipment to track and monitor gas concentration intervals. Parameters were audited per the technical protocol to maintain optimal phytosanitary treatment conditions.

5
Aeration, safety clearance testing, and acceptance

At the conclusion of the exposure time, VFC Fumigation conducted gas aeration and utilized specialized detection instruments to verify Methyl Bromide concentrations. Upon confirming that residual gas fell below the Threshold Limit Value (TLV), the team retrieved all fumigation materials and coordinated with the plant quarantine authority and the client for final treatment acceptance.

Results

Elimination of Target Pests

The phytosanitary treatment protocol was deployed and completed strictly as planned. The treatment results achieved total mortality of all insect life stages in the imported DDGS consignment, successfully resolving the pest infestation identified during initial inspection.

Completion of safety clearance protocol

Following the 48-hour exposure period, gas aeration and clearance testing to verify safe Threshold Limit Values (TLV) were executed prior to retrieving materials and concluding operations.

On-schedule release of 30 containers

VFC Fumigation coordinated with the plant quarantine authority and the client to complete treatment acceptance. All 30 DDGS containers were released strictly on schedule, enabling the enterprise to proceed with its commodity intake plan.

"The consignment had already undergone fumigation in the US, but live insects were still detected upon arrival in Vietnam, creating significant obstacles for our cargo intake operations. VFC Fumigation promptly coordinated with all relevant stakeholders, developed a fully compliant treatment plan, and deployed it synchronously across all 30 containers. The phytosanitary treatment process was tightly controlled, successfully passed regulatory acceptance, and enabled us to release the cargo right on schedule."
