In large-capacity agricultural storage silo systems, ensuring the uniform distribution of fumigant gas remains a significant technical challenge. For silos that can hold up to 8,000 tons of commodities and stand several tens of meters high, even a single area failing to achieve the required treatment concentration can compromise the fumigation effectiveness of the entire bulk. The introduction of J-System technology, with its active gas recirculation mechanism, has helped resolve this issue, enhancing pest control efficiency in industrial-scale storage systems.

1. Challenges in Large-Scale Silo Fumigation

In the agricultural storage industry, silos are designed with large capacities to optimize storage and transport. Many systems can hold up to 8,000 tons of commodities with a height of up to 45 meters.

However, this scale also presents several challenges for the fumigation process:

  • Fumigant gas is difficult to distribute uniformly throughout the entire commodity mass.
  • Highly susceptible to “dead zones” where gas concentration fails to reach the level required to eliminate insects.
  • Natural diffusion processes can be time-consuming.
  • Risk of residual insects and re-infestation following treatment

In tall and complex storage structures, even a single area failing to meet treatment standards can impact thousands of tons of agricultural commodities.

2. What is J-System technology?

J-System is a fumigation support system developed by Detia Degesch GmbH (Germany) – one of the world's leading manufacturers of fumigation technology.

Unlike traditional fumigation methods based on the natural diffusion of gas, J-System operates on a mechanism of forced circulation and gas mixing within the fumigation space.

The system includes:

  • Specialized motors and fans
  • Gas piping system installed inside the silo
  • Control unit for operating gas circulation

During operation, fumigant gas is drawn from the top surface of the commodity mass and pushed to the bottom of the silo through the piping system, thereby creating a continuous circulation flow throughout the entire commodity bulk.

3. Operating Principles of the J-System

The operating mechanism of the J-System can be summarized in three main steps:

Step 1: Fumigant Generation

Fumigant is placed on the surface of the commodity mass and begins releasing gas according to standard procedures.

Step 2: Activating the Recirculation System

Specialized fans and motors create a slow-moving airflow, drawing fumigant gas from the top of the silo.

Step 3: Gas Distribution Throughout the Commodity Mass

The gas is channeled to the bottom of the silo through a piping system and continues to permeate back into the commodity, forming a continuous gas circulation loop.

Thanks to this mechanism, the fumigant gas concentration is maintained consistently at various positions within the silo.

4. Key Advantages of the J-System

Applying a gas recirculation system significantly enhances the effectiveness of the fumigation process.

Maintain uniform gas concentration

Fumigant gas is stably distributed throughout the entire commodity mass, minimizing concentration discrepancies between different areas.

Suitable for high-capacity silos

The system operates effectively even in silos reaching several tens of meters in height, where natural diffusion methods often face limitations.

Minimize the risk of “dead zones”

Forced gas recirculation helps maximize the elimination of areas that fail to reach the required treatment concentration.

Increase pest control efficiency

Thanks to uniform gas distribution, the effectiveness of insect elimination throughout the entire commodity mass is markedly improved.

5. Practical Application in Vietnam

With over 50 years of experience in commodity fumigation, VFC Fumigation is a pioneer in successfully implementing J-System technology for silo treatment projects in Vietnam.

Implementing this system not only enhances pest control effectiveness in agricultural storage but also contributes to bringing domestic silo fumigation processes closer to international technological standards.

In the context of the agricultural and export sectors increasingly demanding higher standards for storage quality, the application of advanced fumigation technologies has become more essential than ever.

The J-System is not merely a technical solution, but an operational standard that enhances effectiveness, safety, and sustainability in industrial-scale silo fumigation operations.
