On august 19, 2022, a bilateral online meeting was held between the Plant Protection Department and the United States department of agriculture animal and plant health inspection service (APHIS). The meeting was also attended by APHIS representatives in Vietnam. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, deputy director general of the Plant Protection Department, and Mr. Ibrahim Shaqir, deputy associate administrator of APHIS, co-chaired the meeting.
During the meeting, both parties agreed on procedures to soon announce approval for the import of Vietnamese pomelo into the United States. Regarding grapefruit from the United States, PPD will provide a draft import requirement proposal and APHIS will respond as soon as possible to conclude the negotiation process.

In addition, APHIS will expedite the completion of the pest risk assessment for Vietnamese coconuts by the end of this year. The two sides also discussed market opening proposals for the next line of products, including US lemons and mandarins, and Vietnamese passion fruit.
In addition, several alternative phytosanitary treatments to irradiation were proposed for fresh fruits exported from Vietnam to the United States, such as methyl bromide treatment for lychees and vapor heat treatment for dragon fruits, while import requirements for US nectarines and peaches were also updated.
In the coming time, PPD and APHIS will continue to cooperate in updating and exchanging information on phytosanitary regulations, e-Phyto, and the Agricultural Commodity Import Requirements (ACIR) database. PPD also proposed to APHIS the establishment of a technical working group to help expedite the pest risk assessment process.
