On august 19, 2022, a bilateral online meeting was held between the Plant Protection Department and the United States department of agriculture animal and plant health inspection service (APHIS). The meeting was also attended by APHIS representatives in Vietnam. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, deputy director general of the Plant Protection Department, and Mr. Ibrahim Shaqir, deputy associate administrator of APHIS, co-chaired the meeting.
During the meeting, both parties agreed on procedures to soon announce approval for the import of Vietnamese pomelo into the United States. Regarding grapefruit from the United States, PPD will provide a draft import requirement proposal and APHIS will respond as soon as possible to conclude the negotiation process.

In addition, APHIS will accelerate the completion of the pest risk assessment for Vietnamese coconuts by the end of this year. Both parties also discussed proposals for market access of additional products, including lemons and mandarins from the United States and passion fruit from Vietnam. Furthermore, several supplementary phytosanitary treatment methods for fresh fruits exported from Vietnam to the United States were proposed as alternatives to irradiation, including methyl bromide treatment for lychee and vapor heat treatment for dragon fruit, while also updating import requirements for nectarines and peaches from the United States.
In the coming period, PPD and APHIS will continue cooperating in updating and exchanging information regarding phytosanitary regulations, ephyto systems, and the agricultural commodity import requirements database (ACIR). PPD also proposed that APHIS establish a technical working group to help accelerate the pest risk assessment process.
